Accessibility

We want Sigil to be usable by everyone, and we would rather tell you exactly where we stand than put a badge on the page.

What we aim for

WCAG 2.2 Level AA, as the standard the Americans with Disabilities Act is measured against in practice, applied to sigilbot.io and to the Sigil Studio inside Discord.

We are a small company and we do not claim to have passed a formal third-party audit, because we have not had one. What follows is what we actually do and what we have actually measured.

What we check, on every change

These run as automated gates, on every page and at six screen widths from a 1440px desktop down to a 400px phone, plus the short panel height Discord gives an activity:

• Contrast. Every piece of text is measured against what is painted behind it, against a 4.5:1 floor. Not sampled: measured on the rendered page.
• Keyboard. Every control that can take focus is checked for a visible focus indicator, so you can always see where you are. The last run checked 56 stops across the site.
• Tap targets. Every control is checked against a 44px minimum, so a button is not a pinpoint on a phone.
• Layout. No page is allowed to scroll sideways, and no floating panel is allowed to sit somewhere you cannot reach.
• Structure, on every page. Nine automated rules, each naming the WCAG success criterion it enforces: the page declares its language (3.1.1), has a non-empty title (2.4.2), exactly one main landmark and one h1 with no skipped heading levels (1.3.1), every image carries an alt attribute (1.1.1), every form control has an accessible name (4.1.2), every link and button has discernible text (2.4.4), nothing forces a positive tab order (2.4.3), and the skip link points at a target that can actually hold focus (2.4.1). That last one matters more than it sounds: a fragment link only moves focus if its target takes tabindex="-1", and without it the page scrolls while focus stays in the nav, which most automated checkers pass either way.

Every one of those rules is proven against a planted defect before it is trusted, and against a clean page, so a rule that convicts everything is caught too.

What we do NOT claim

Being straight about the edges is more useful than a blanket statement:

• We have not had an independent audit, and we do not claim conformance a third party verified.
• We have not tested with every screen reader. Our checks are automated, and automated checks find a real subset of problems, not all of them. Nothing replaces a person using the software.
• The 3D preview on the hoodie and sign designers is a visual tool. Everything it does can be done without it, and the price, the options and the checkout do not depend on it, but the preview itself is not usable without sight.
• Generated pictures are made from your description, and we cannot write alt text for an image we did not choose. When you post one, please add your own description.
• Discord itself is not ours. The Studio runs inside Discord’s client, and Discord’s own accessibility is outside our control.
• No overlay. We do not use an accessibility overlay or widget. They do not make a site conformant and we would rather fix the page.

Tell us the page or the command, what you were trying to do, and what got in the way. If you use assistive technology, naming it helps us reproduce the problem. We will reply, and if we cannot fix something quickly we will tell you that plainly and offer another way to get it done.
