These terms are the agreement between you and HappyDale Holding LLC (“we”, “us”) about your use of Sigil. Sigil is the Discord bot that appears as SIGIL#8624, the sigilbot.io website, and the Sigil Pro subscription.
By adding Sigil to a Discord server, using a Sigil command, or subscribing to Sigil Pro, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use Sigil.
We have tried to write this in plain English. Where a section sounds formal, it is because it needs to be clear in a dispute, not because we are trying to hide anything.
1. What Sigil is
Sigil generates QR codes inside Discord. You type /qr, a private panel opens, you set your link, and Sigil renders a code. The preview is visible only to you until you choose to post it to a channel.
There are two tiers.
Free. Unlimited plain black-and-white QR codes. Each one has a small “made with Sigil” caption rendered beneath the code, never on the code itself, so the caption does not affect scanning. No account and no card are needed.
Sigil Pro. $1.99 per month. Pro adds a logo embedded in the code, colors picked from a curated board where every pair is contrast-checked, module styles (Classic, Rounded, Dots, and Framed with a caption), a saved brand kit so later codes are branded automatically, a history of your last 50 codes, and no caption.
Before you ever see a code, Sigil decodes it itself and compares the decoded payload byte for byte against what you asked for. That check exists so a logo or color choice that would break scanning gets caught at generation time. It is a real check and it is the reason we built Sigil, but it is a check on the image we produced, not a promise about every scanner, camera, printer, screen, lighting condition, or surface in the world. See section 8.
2. Who can use Sigil
You need a Discord account in good standing, and you must be old enough to use Discord in your country. Your use of Discord is governed by Discord’s own terms, which are separate from ours. If Discord suspends or removes your access, we cannot restore it.
3. Acceptable use
You are responsible for what your codes point to. Do not use Sigil to create, post, or distribute a QR code that:
- leads to malware, a drive-by download, or anything designed to compromise a device
- leads to a phishing page, a fake login screen, or any attempt to trick someone into giving up credentials, money, or personal information
- impersonates a person, brand, or organization you are not authorized to represent
- points to content that violates Discord’s Terms of Service or Community Guidelines
- points to content that is illegal where you or your audience are, including content that sexualizes minors
- infringes someone else’s copyright or trademark, including uploading a logo you do not have the right to use
You also agree not to attack or degrade the service. That means no attempts to overload, flood, or deny service to Sigil; no scraping, automating, or scripting around the Discord interface to send bulk requests; no probing for vulnerabilities, no attempts to break out of our rendering process, and no uploading files crafted to exploit an image decoder. Do not resell Sigil output as your own QR service, and do not try to reverse engineer the bot.
If you find a security problem, tell us on the support server instead of exploiting it. We will not be difficult about a good-faith report.
4. The free-tier caption
Free codes carry the “made with Sigil” caption beneath them. That caption is how free stays free.
You may not crop, erase, cover, edit, or otherwise remove the caption from a free code, and you may not present a modified free code as if it were paid output. If you want a code without the caption, subscribe to Pro. That is the whole deal, and it is not a technical restriction we are daring you to beat, it is a term of use.
Removing the caption is a breach of these terms and grounds for suspension.
5. Your content and your rights
You keep everything you own. Links, logos, and brand colors you supply stay yours.
You give us a limited license to use what you upload only to run the service for you: to fetch the file, re-encode it, render your code, save your brand kit if you set one, and keep your recent history if you are a Pro subscriber. We do not use your logo or your links to market Sigil, and we do not sell them.
You confirm that you have the right to use any logo or artwork you upload.
The QR codes Sigil produces for you are yours to use. Sigil itself, including the bot, the website, the rendering pipeline, and the name, stays ours.
6. Sigil Pro subscription terms
Price and billing. Sigil Pro is $1.99 per month. It is a recurring subscription. It renews automatically each month at the then-current price until you cancel. Taxes may be added depending on where you are.
Cancelling. You can cancel any time. When you cancel, Pro features stay active through the end of the period you already paid for, and then your account returns to the free tier. Nothing is deleted at cancellation beyond the Pro-only features going away.
Refunds. We do not refund partial months. If you cancel in the middle of a month, you keep Pro until that month runs out rather than getting money back for the unused days.
That said, we deal fairly. If Sigil was broken for a meaningful stretch of your billing period, if you were charged twice, or if you were charged after cancelling, contact us on the support server and we will make it right. We would rather fix a billing mistake than argue about $1.99.
Price changes. If we change the price of Pro, we will tell you at least 30 days before it applies to you, through the support server and the Discord panel. If you do not want the new price, cancel before it takes effect.
Payment processing. Payments are handled by a third-party payment processor. We do not hold your card number. The processor has its own terms and privacy policy, and those apply to the payment itself.
Feature changes. We may add, change, or retire individual Pro features as the product develops. If we remove something significant that you were relying on, we will say so in advance where we reasonably can.
7. Suspension and termination
We may suspend or terminate your access to Sigil if you break these terms, particularly section 3 or section 4, or if your use puts the service or other users at risk.
Where it is reasonable, we will warn you first and give you a chance to fix it. For serious abuse, such as phishing, malware, or an attack on the service, we may act immediately and without notice.
If we terminate a paid account for abuse, we are not obligated to refund the remainder of that month.
You can stop using Sigil at any time. Remove the bot from your server, and run /sigil forget if you want everything we hold about you deleted.
8. What we do not promise
Sigil is provided “as is” and “as available”.
We built the decode-and-verify check because we think it is the right way to make QR codes, and it catches problems that other generators ship to the user. But we do not guarantee that every code will scan on every device, in every app, at every size, on every material, in every lighting condition. Printing, screen quality, camera hardware, damage, distance, and scanning apps are all outside our control. Test your code in the real setting before you put it in front of people. If a code matters, test it on the actual printed piece, at the actual size, with a few different phones.
We do not guarantee that the service will be uninterrupted or error free, or that it will always be available. Sigil runs on Discord and other third-party infrastructure, and those can go down.
We are not verifying, endorsing, or monitoring the destinations your codes point to. A code generated by Sigil is not a statement by us that the link is safe or legitimate.
To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
We make no claims about certifications, audits, or insurance, because we do not have any to claim. We are a small US LLC running a Discord bot, and we would rather say that plainly than imply otherwise.
Some places do not allow certain warranty disclaimers. If you live somewhere like that, the parts that cannot legally be disclaimed do not apply to you, and the rest of this section still stands.
9. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows:
We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost revenue, lost business, lost data, or reprinting and reprocurement costs, arising out of your use of Sigil.
Our total liability to you for any and all claims relating to Sigil is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you actually paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or (b) twenty US dollars.
This is a low-cost consumer service. The limit reflects that. If you need contractual guarantees at a scale that this limit does not cover, Sigil is not the right tool for that job, and you should not rely on it as if it were.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot legally be limited, such as liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
10. You are responsible for your codes
This is worth its own section because it is the point people miss.
Sigil encodes what you give it. If you enter a link, the code points to that link. We do not check whether the destination is safe, accurate, current, or yours. We do not check whether you have the right to use the logo you uploaded.
If someone scans your code and lands somewhere harmful, misleading, or infringing, that is on you, not on us. You agree to cover us for claims, losses, and reasonable legal costs that come from your codes, your uploads, or your breach of these terms.
11. Privacy, in short
The full details are in our Privacy Policy. The summary: we store Discord user IDs and nothing else that identifies you. No emails, no names, no payment data held by us. Free-tier QR targets are kept for at most 24 hours. Pro history keeps your last 50 codes while you are subscribed. Running /sigil forget deletes everything Sigil holds about you.
Uploads are PNG or JPEG only, SVG is refused, files are fetched only from Discord’s own CDN, size and dimensions are capped, and every image is re-encoded to clean pixels with metadata stripped. Rendering runs in an isolated, resource-capped process separate from the bot.
12. Changes to these terms
We will update these terms as the product changes. When we do, we will change the “Last updated” date at the top and post the new version at sigilbot.io.
For changes that materially affect you, such as new restrictions on use, a change to the subscription terms, or a price increase, we will give at least 30 days’ notice through the support server and the Discord panel before the change applies.
Continuing to use Sigil after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms. If you do not accept them, stop using Sigil and cancel any subscription.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute goes to the state or federal courts located in Delaware, and you and we agree to their jurisdiction.
If you are a consumer somewhere with laws that give you rights you cannot sign away, those rights still apply to you, and this section does not take them from you.
14. The usual closing bits
Whole agreement. These terms, plus the Privacy Policy, are the full agreement between you and us about Sigil, and they replace anything said before.
If part of this is unenforceable. If a court strikes a section, the rest still applies.
No waiver. If we do not enforce something right away, we have not given up the right to enforce it later.
Transfers. You cannot transfer your rights under these terms to someone else. We may transfer ours if the business is sold or reorganized, and your terms carry over unchanged.
No partnership. Using Sigil does not make you our employee, agent, or partner.
